How the Rook Works
The Rook and the Queen are the capital pieces in your army.
If you have a lone Rook with your King against a lone King you
can win by force, likewise in you have a lone Queen with your King
against a lone King you can force a win. This, and the rooks ability
to strike any color square across long distances make it the second most
powerful piece.
Moving
Rooks move and attack in the same manner. They work along open lines
(they cannot jump over pieces) and they move either vertically or
horizontally, along a straight line, as far as you want until they hit
another piece. Rooks cannot change direction mid move and they must halt
upon capturing an enemy piece.
Castling
Rooks have a special ability they employ with the King (It's a King move).
If neither the King nor the Rook to be used has previously moved, and
If the King is not presently in check, and
If squares between the King and Rook are empty, and
Those empty squares are safe so that the King will not pass through check,
Then the King may move two steps towards the Rook and the Rook passes to his
opposite shoulder
Remembering the Start
When setting up the board you need a light square at your right hand "light on right"
no matter what color you're playing. The Rooks occupy the four corners.
Rooks go on a1 and h1 for White and on a8 and h8 for Black.
Value
Rooks are valued at 5 pawns.
